Sure, one might characterize a jig as essentially a hunk of lead or a slab of metal. But a run through this gallery of various new jigs on display at this year’s ICAST international tackle trade show reveals a different story, with many innovative designs and appealing color patterns. Prices are rounded to the nearest dollar.
13 Fishing Octopi Jig
- The Octopi is by any measure an innovative lead-head, with a the head shaped to resemble the abdomen of an octopus and a heavy rubber skirt imitating tentacles. Unlike traditional lead-head jigs built around a single hook, the Octopi utilizes two strong assist hooks. The head is designed so the jig sits upright at rest. The Octopi won the Best Saltwater Hard Lure at this year’s ICAST. Five sizes (2, 4, 6 9 and 12 ounces).
- Five colors
Berkley Fusion 19 Jig
- Designed to be fished with Gulp! or any soft-plastic bait, the Fusion jigs offer two tie points for varying presentations. Equipped with a trademarked Fusion19 hook and a bait keeper. Twelve sizes (1/8 ounce to 8 ounces).
- Eight colors
Mustad Zippy, Daggerman and Moonriser Speed Jigs
- Variously weighted for different presentations, the Zippy is bottom weighted, the Daggerman is divided 60:40 toward the front and the slim Moonriser is front weighted. Jigs come equipped with a single Mustad assist hook.
- 10 color patterns for each
Nomad Design Tackle Buffalo Jig
- This slow-pitch jig is center balanced; the jig flutters erratically on the fall and is particularly effective on any game fish hanging deep. It comes with a super-strong BKK assist hook, which can be rigged on the tail to help slow the rate of fall.
- Five sizes (3 to 11 ounces).
- Nine colors
Ocean Born Flying Bouncer and Flying Deflector Jigs
- Patrick Sebile, who designed these bucktail jigs, added side wings and belly ribs. The wings add lift to let the jig glide when dropped on a pause, and to help deflect the lure from snags. The ribs create additional turbulence. A metal sleeve atop the bucktail makes the lure more durable.

Ocean Tackle International Jumbo Jig
- Excellent all-around jig for many situations including open-water tuna in heavy current or bottom-bouncing for grouper. The rear-weighted body drops quickly.

Shimano Coltsniper Jigs
- Designed as a casting jig when distance is critical for anglers fishing from shore or from a boat where spooky fish are busting.
- Eight colors
Shimano Lucanus Flat Fall Jig
- This unusual design is billed as a hybrid between the original Lucanus lead-head and the Butterfly Flat-Fall jig. It’s designed to be repeatedly wound slowly some distance off bottom then dropped. As it falls, a sliding action with a horizontal attitude keeps it in the strike zone longer. Five sizes available (60 to 180 grams).
- Eight colors
Spro Power Bucktail Jig
- By angler request, Spro has added to its lineup of bucktails this jig built around a Gamakatsu extra-heavy hook. It’s tied with extra bucktail to slow the jig’s fall on the drop, staying in the strike zone longer. The Power Jig comes in four sizes (1-, 1.5-, 2- and 3-ounce)
- Two colors (white or chartreuse)
