The Miami International Boat Show, cancelled last year due to COVID, successfully reemerged last week — Feb. 16-20 — at its original Miami Beach Convention Center location. This year’s Miami International Boat Show showcased some amazing new vessels and some larger boats with cutting-edge technology in the design and in the features.

We definitely saw a continuation of several trends such as dual consoles and catamarans. All builders, whether creating small 18-footers or giant, quad- and quint-powered luxury fish boats, also have kept an eye on family comforts while remembering the hardcore anglers. We rarely see a center console these days without forward seating, even loungers, and a fold-out transom bench.

We noticed too that many boats in the 30-foot-and-up range displayed a trend toward minimalism at the helm. Glass-bridge displays, once only characteristic on big sport-fishers, are now common as electronics network with all onboard systems, eliminating the need for multiple switches and controls.

All of this makes for great boat shopping whether in-person or online. Enjoy!

While a gallery of all the capable outboard fishing boats at the monster 2019 Miami International Boat Show would be a bit overwhelming, check out this sampling of 20 boats, many of them new or very recent — and all worthy of some serious boat lust.

Blackfin 332 CC
Blackfin’s all-new 332 CC is rated for up to 900 hp for the 33-foot 2-inch (LOA) hull, with a 23-degree transom deadrise. The manufacturer claims “the smoothest ride in its class.” Doug Olander / Sport Fishing

The generous cockpit includes a wide tackle-rigging station with pull-out Yeti coolers and a baitwell (in addition to another large lighted, insulated baitwell in the transom). Doug Olander / Sport Fishing

This 21-footer is the flagship of Whaler‘s venerable Montauk line. It features a stable 8 ½-foot beam and a 16-degree transom deadrise. Rated for 200 horsepower, the 210 hit 40 mph with a single 150 in manufacturer tests. Doug Olander / Sport Fishing

A buyer can choose various options including a bow backrest, a deluxe leaning-post with a 30-gallon livewell and raw-water washdown, and a fishing package with a 94-quart cooler seat, rod holders and tackle drawers. Doug Olander / Sport Fishing

Also an option is the fiberglass hardtop shown here. Doug Olander / Sport Fishing
Cabo 41

Cabo 41

Production of Cabo Yachts was suspended in 2014, and that struck a sad chord with many boating anglers. But the 2019 Miami International Boat Show brought reason to rejoice with the debut of the Cabo 41, signaling a re-introduction of the vaunted brand by Cabo/Hatteras Yachts, based in New Bern, North Carolina. With an LOA of 42 feet, 10 inches, and a beam of 15 feet, 9 inches, the 41 carries a transom deadrise of 15 degrees. Jim Hendricks / Sport Fishing
Cabo 41
The new Cabo 41 features an express layout and comes standard with twin 626 hp Volvo Penta D11 diesel engines, with upgrades available to 670 and 725 hp twins, as well as Cummins QSM11 propulsion. Jim Hendricks / Sport Fishing
Cabo 41
The Cabo 41 offers an expansive helm with room for a trio of 22-inch multifunction displays. I found an open helm deck and mezzanine seating in the cockpit. The interior offers a private queen-berth stateroom, full galley, head and salon with a wrap-around settee/dining area that converts to a second berth. Jim Hendricks / Sport Fishing

Contender 44 ST

Contender 44 ST

Contender Boats debuted its largest boat yet, the 44ST at the Miami show. With an LOA of 43 feet, 10 inches, the new center console carries a maximum horsepower rating of 2,000 ponies to push a sharp-entry, 24½-degree-transom-deadrise hull. The Homestead, Florida-based boat builder had two of the 44ST models in the water at the show, one with triple Yamaha 425 XTO outboards and another with quad 425 XTOs. Jim Hendricks / Sport Fishing
Contender 44 ST
With a beam of more than 12 feet, the Contender 44ST features a double-step hull designed to maximize performance, speed and fuel efficiency. It also features an in-stem anchor chute/roller. Jim Hendricks / Sport Fishing
Contender 44 ST
Contender’s new 44ST comes with second-row seating for three in addition to traditional helm seating for three. Abaft the seating is a full-featured tackle station and slide-out Frigid Rigid cooler. The port-side tuna door eases boarding and landing big fish. Jim Hendricks / Sport Fishing

Luxurious bow seating available for the new Contender 44ST also adds stowage lockers underneath. Jim Hendricks / Sport Fishing
Grady-White Canyon 376
Grady-White’s most recent flagship center console — the Canyon 456 — might garner the most attention from boat showgoers and media, but the company’s previous flagship CC, the Canyon 376, has certainly kept its luxurious luster. The 36-foot-7-inch SeaV2 V-hull features a 13-foot-two-inch beam that provides stability and loads of space above and belowdecks. Its 41-gallon livewell and optional additional 41-gallon well, cockpit side door, multiple insulated fish boxes and well-appointed rigging station satisfy the punch list for anglers. Insetta 45
Insetta Boatworks’ 45 tunnel-hull catamaran (47 to 49 feet LOA depending upon model) isn’t a new boat, but its unique design and vast open fishing area continue to turn heads. With twin Yanmar turbo diesels, the 45 tops out at 47 mph. (If you’re after speed more than efficiency, consider the outboard version: With quad 300s, the manufacturer claims more than 70 mph.) Doug Olander / Sport Fishing
Insetta 45
Rod storage and holders are not an issue on this 45. The Release deluxe fighting chair is an option. Doug Olander / Sport Fishing
Insetta 45
Beneath a removable pad offering capacious and comfortable rear-facing seating abaft the helm seats are two compression-sealed 29-gallon livewells. Doug Olander / Sport Fishing

Invincible 37 Cat
Invincible Boats has followed its successful entry into the multi-hull market with a second model, the 37 Cat, which was in the water at the 2019 Miami International Boat Show alongside the multi-hull flagship, the 40 Cat. This 37 was powered by quad Mercury 350 Verado outboards. Jim Hendricks / Sport Fishing
Invincible 37 Cat
The Invincible 37 Cat carries its 12-foot beam well forward, and that provides abundant and stable deck space in the bow. The boat features a level deck throughout. Jim Hendricks / Sport Fishing
Invincible 37 Cat
The wide stance and beamy deck of the Invincible 37 Cat allows for extra-wide walkways on both sides of the center console. That makes it easy to follow a speedy fish along the rail. Jim Hendricks / Sport Fishing

The Invincible 37 Cat features a well-designed helm with a central wheel and plenty of room for a pair of large multifunction displays. The center console is integrated with the frame for the hardtop, and there’s helm seating for three. Jim Hendricks / Sport Fishing

With an LOA of 26 feet, 9 inches, the 26XO weighs 5,900 pounds with a single 300-hp engine. The 17-degree-deadrise hull topped out at just over 45 mph with a Yamaha F300XCA. Costa Sunglasses has partnered with the Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show, presented by West Marine, to promote conservation and educate anglers and boaters about marine-resource protection in a Costa Conservation Village at the show site. The Miami boat show runs Feb. 14-18 at the Miami Marine Stadium.

The village will feature exhibits by more than a dozen conservation leaders including The Billfish Foundation, Captains for Clean Water, and Bonefish Tarpon Trust as well as state and federal government entities. South Florida marine artist and angler Coastal Kristen will make daily appearances.

As a part of the effort to reduce plastic use and to raise awareness, the boat show will join Costa’s Kick Plastic initiative, placing filtered-water stations at key points around the show. Costa will offer reusable water containers for sale — 24-ounce aluminum water bottles for $10 — to help reduce the amount of plastic used at the show. Attendees who purchase a Kick Plastic bottle will receive a free gift from Costa at the Conservation Village.

“The Miami Boat Show’s commitment to conservation with the Costa Conservation Village and their efforts, as an industry leader, to Kick Plastic are a big step in helping raise awareness for the issues facing our watery world,” says Andrew Cox, offshore community leader for Costa. “Costa believes it’s our responsibility to protect and preserve our oceans and waterways, a pillar that ties directly to our brand mission, and we’re proud to have industry partners like the Miami Boat Show helping in those efforts.”

Additional conservation initiatives at the show include:

  • The boat show has eliminated plastic straws.
  • Concessions are introducing a new line of disposables for ‘grab and go’ items that are recyclable and compostable.
  • There will be zero Styrofoam on the premises (for the third year in a row).
  • Renewable and plant-based coffee cups, sleeves, and recyclable lids will be used throughout the show.
  • The boat show is removing the use of hard plastic utensils from the docks and VIP Lounge, replaced with Green Ware Products utensils.
  • The boat show is eliminating the printing of official show press materials and transitioning exclusively to digital.

The Miami International Boat Show and the Miami Yacht Show, both scheduled Feb. 14-18 on the water near downtown, showcase thousands of new boats from inflatables to mega yachts. This year, saltwater anglers can find plenty of beautiful fiberglass to simply ogle or comparison shop. Here are five new boats that fit a range of fishing interests that will be displayed to the public for the first time. Sport Fishing editors will provide on-site coverage via social-media and web updates during the next two weeks.

It carries a 17-degree deadrise angle at the transom and floats in 14 inches of water with the engine up. A seating and tackle center, Garmin 16 Fish Package and fiberglass T-top with integrated wraparound windshield will come standard.

Raymarine, Mercury Marine and Boston Whaler today demonstrated for media in Florida an assisted-docking system that was first announced by Raymarine earlier this month at an international boat show in Germany. The new DockSense system will also be on display Feb. 14-18 at the Miami International Boat Show.

DockSense uses a Virtual Bumper zone around the vessel to assist boat owners in tight-quarter docking. Camera sensors continuously monitor the vessel’s surroundings, keeping the system updated with real-time detection of objects like pilings or vessels. DockSense includes multiple FLIR machine vision cameras, a central processing module and an app running on Raymarine’s Axiom navigation display.

DockSense provides feedback to the Mercury Autonomous system to allow the boat’s joystick piloting setup to autonomously respond and ensure a smooth docking process. Integrating DockSense “is a natural next step for Mercury,” the outboard company said in a statement released today. More than a decade ago, Mercury introduced Zeus and Axius joystick-steering systems, and in 2013, Mercury debuted Joystick Piloting for Outboards (JPO). All three were developed as precursors to autonomous vessel control.

At the demonstration, which took place at a Mercury Marine testing facility in central Florida, DockSense was featured aboard a 33-foot Boston Whaler Outrage center console, rigged with twin Mercury Verado engines with JPO and with Mercury’s advanced piloting-assist system. This new system is a core technology based on the latest aerospace control systems and autonomous-car Artificial Intelligence, the company says.

While not in the market yet, Mercury’s autonomous system will support a variety of future uses for assisted and semi-autonomous functionality, as it can be integrated with sensors like cameras and lidar, a detection system that works on the principle of radar but uses light from a laser. The Florida demonstrations will be used to capture market feedback toward adoption and commercialization of these technologies.

Mercury Marine and Boston Whaler are brands owned by the Brunswick Corporation. Raymarine and FLIR are owned by FLIR Systems.
