One word describes the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show: Big! With multiple venues, hundreds of exhibits, and more boats, motors, electronics and accessories than you can imagine, this show can be overwhelming. But if you’re looking to live large, this is the show for you. The 2023 show did not disappoint. Here are some of the big products for boating anglers I saw at FLIBS this year.

Formula 457 FISH

Formula 457 FISH
Formula 457 FISH Courtesy Formula Boats

Formula Boats staged a huge announcement at FLIBS. It introduced a big new center-console: the Formula 457 Fish. The company presented a detailed scale model of the new boat, and the real thing will be at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2024.

“Built to your preference, from hardcore fishing to upscale sport cruising, or a little of both, the 457 will match your boating style,” Formula’s Scott Porter announced. “Opt for foldaway aft seating and pressurized bait wells, plus the bait station and fully appointed tower command for a fishing battlewagon. We will build a boat to suit your wants and needs.”

At 47 feet, 7 inches in length with a beam of 13 feet, 9 inches, the 457 will boast a 700-gallon fuel capacity and up to three Mercury Verado 600-hp V-12 outboards. Two rows of helm seating will accommodate eight crew members in comfort. Speaking of comfort, a fully appointed cabin will make long cruises and overnighting at the islands a genuine pleasure.

Grady-White Canyon 386

Grady-White Canyon 386

Grady-White Boats always seems to make big news at FLIBS, and this year was even more spectacular with the debut of the Canyon 386 center console. Mirroring the best design elements of the Grady-White flagship model, the Canyon 456, the 386 offers an immense amount of deck space.

“You’ll find no other boats of its class with the magnitude of square footage that we’ve been able to create in our design process,” said Grady-White Product Designer Christian Carraway. “With an eye toward fishability and luxury, we’ve crafted a boat that’s both rugged and refined.”

With a length of 36½ feet and beam of 13 feet, 2 inches, the Canyon 386 features four luxurious helm seats and a spacious, fully appointed cabin accessed from a sliding door on the helm deck. The roomy cockpit has side doors on both sides, dual 35-gallon transom livewells, and a 291-quart insulated refrigerator/freezer fish box with a digitally controlled thermostat. A fold-away transom bench seat offers extra seating, but tucks away quickly when the angling action heats up.

On the forward console is an inviting lounger and posh seating in the bow. The updated engine area eliminates the traditional motor well and supports triple Yamaha XTO Offshore 450-hp outboards, now available in classic white to perfectly match the iconic Grady-White gelcoat.

Aquila 47 Molokai

Aquila 47 Molokai
Aquila 47 Molokai Courtesy Aquila

The ranks of big offshore-capable power catamarans welcome a new member at FLIBS: the Aquila 47 Molokai. The double-step 45-foot, 8-inch-long cat hull features carbon-fiber forward and aft main bulkheads to create the structural strength required for up to four powerful 400-hp outboards. High tunnel clearance creates an air cushion and reduces hull noise when trolling. The deck level offers 360 degrees of walk-around space, and the forward platform grants elevation when cast-netting for bait to fill the twin 42.5-gallon transom pressurized livewells. There are 180 gallons of in-sole fish-box capacity and two 74-gallon forward coffin boxes.

Port and starboard side doors ease boarding of crew and big fish. A console sliding door at the helm offers access to the cabin boasting a queen berth and an enclosed head with a shower for cruising and overnighting. Expansive hull-side windows provide cabin illumination. The hardtop integrates stylishly with the full-height windshield, protecting two rows of helm seating for up to seven crew members.

Garmin GPSMAP 9000 Series

Garmin GPSMAP 9000 Series
Garmin GPSMAP 9000 Series Courtesy Garmin

Talk about big! Garmin’s new GPSMAP 9000 chartplotter series is available with 19-, 22-, 24- or 27-inch touchscreen displays. The multifunction displays (MFDs) boast stunning 4K resolution with edge-to-edge clarity, and are powered by a processor that’s seven-times faster than previous generations. They also feature the new Garmin BlueNet gigabit network for comprehensive, high-speed connectivity throughout the boat with sensors and other networked devices.

Each new MFD can be flat or flush mounted, and offer in-plane switching (IPS) touchscreen displays that can be seen from all viewing angles, even with polarized sunglasses. The GPSMAP 9219, 9222, 9224 and 9227 come preloaded with Garmin Navionics+ mapping that includes Auto Guidance+ technology for faster and more detailed route calculations.

ICOM IC-M510BB Black-Box VHF

ICOM IC-M510BB Black-Box VHF
ICOM IC-M510BB Black-Box VHF Courtesy ICOM

ICOM’s new IC-M510BB represents the latest in VHF technology, letting you expand your VHF accessibility throughout the boat. All operations, including DSC, can be made from the CommandMic allowing the VHF radio unit to be installed in an out-of-sight place and as far as 60 feet from the CommandMic. Up to three of the CommandMics can be connected to the IC-M510BB, which allows it to double as an onboard intercom system on large boats. NMEA 2000 networking capabilities provide plug-and-play data communication with other electronics such as an MFDs. The radio can also share GNSS (GPS) position, AIS, and DSC calls with other onboard equipment. The unit has a last-call voice recording function that automatically saves up to two minutes of a recent incoming call. A built-in 15-watt amplifier increases the audio output to an external hailer speaker, and there’s built-in hailer function that also sounds foghorn patterns.

While the pandemic still affected the overall size of this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show — held Oct. 27-31 — many fishing boat builders as well as engine, electronics and gear makers introduced new products and displayed popular models to crowds of eager buyers.

As we combed the docks at the Bahia Mar Yachting Center and the displays at the Broward County Convention Center, we found these 10 new center console and dual console boat models. (Note: Though some of these display models appear to showcase fewer fishing features, they can be customized for an angler’s needs.)

Albemarle 30 Express

Featuring 64 square feet of cockpit space, this express boat gives anglers plenty of room to work lines and fight fish. The transom features a 30-gallon livewell, and two 56-gallon fish boxes reside in the cockpit sole.

The 30 carries 320 gallons of fuel and comes with two berths for longer, overnight trips.

Although this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show looked and felt significantly different, due to the pandemic, nothing could stop the parade of new fiberglass aimed at a flourishing boating market.

Our staff members who attended noticed reduced crowds, at least during the week, and masks were mandatory. With fewer exhibitors, show managers dropped the Broward County Convention Center as a venue. Many of the fish-boat builders were moved to the main show location at Bahia Mar Yachting Center.

Despite the obstacles, many builders debuted brand-new boats. Others brought still-new-for-2020 models. Here are 13 great center- and dual-consoles and fisharounds we saw at the docks and under the tents. (Boats are listed alphabetically by builder.)

Boston Whaler 280 Vantage

Whaler’s most recent Vantage model features a family-friendly dual-console layout with dedicated fishing features such as fishboxes, a transom livewell and multiple rod holders as well as a portside boarding door. It carries 185 gallons of fuel and can handle up to 800 hp. The LOA measures 29 feet 1 inch with platforms, and it features a 9-foot-6-inch beam. Scott Salyers

Solace jostled the center-console boat market in 2019 with its innovative 345. Its big sister — the twin-stepped 41CS — expands on that figuratively and literally. The 41-footer features a one-piece dive door, an electric windshield, and a cockpit fighting chair/rocket launcher. It also has magnets embedded throughout the fiberglass to position cupholders or seating cushions and accessories. Scott Salyers

For whatever reason, this year’s fabulous Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show seemed to me to include an unprecedented number of new-boat introductions, at least in the size of the type that Sport Fishing fans would likely have an interest in. Many of the 31 boats shown here are either brand new at the show or new this year, though I couldn’t help including a couple of merely recent models. Except for each opening running shot, all photos were taken at the show. As should be evident, the boats are listed alphabetically (by manufacturer).

Simrad’s Information Display creates a seamless dash. Chris Woodward

Navico, parent company of Simrad, Lowrance and B&G brands, has launched what it calls a brand new category of marine technology — the information display (ID). IDs combine a sleek design with a configurable interface to simplify monitoring and control of onboard systems. Pre-defined modes include System Checks, Cruising, Anchoring and Water Sports. Custom modes can also be easily configured to builder specifications to best accentuate the utility of an individual vessel or to complement any boater’s passions such as tournament or sport fishing.

The ID comprises bonded-glass displays and a powerful integration hub, which will be available with a choice of Simrad, Lowrance, or B&G electronics. Each solution includes one or multiple displays bridged together to function as one integrated system. The centralized hub uses Ethernet, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity along with Sonar, USB, CAN and NMEA 2000 ports to connect to all onboard systems. The pictured ID shows a remote control element on the vessel’s steering wheel. IDs will be available to boat builders in 2019.

A couple of days spent admiring and photographing outboard fishing boats at the 2018 Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show are enough to create some serious boat envy in any angler. While some bay and flats boats were in evidence, most of the emphasis was on bluewater hulls, as reflected in this gallery. Many of the boats shown here are new models, though not all manufacturers had a new boat to intro at the show.

A full 12 feet of beam provides a cockpit with vast space for fishing and, in the cabin, room for a queen bed converted from L-shaped seating. Its 25-degree deadrise is designed to slice through an offshore headsea.

Yellowfin Carbon 39

For this center console, it’s all about fishing. And about getting there: with four 350 Verados pushing its 10,600 pounds (almost 3,000 lighter than the fiberglass model), in Sport Fishing‘s recent Fish Trial, the boat hit 74-plus mph; it’s run faster for yellowfin. Hard to imagine what it would do with the max-rated 1,650 horses behind it.

Everglades 243CC

Walking underneath a boat gives one an interesting hull perspective. The 243 comes in at 25-8 overall, with an 8-2 beam, and can take 300 horses. Like all Everglades, it’s filled with high-density closed-cell structural foam for flotation making it unsinkable.

Grady White 236 Fisherman

The striking lines of the 236 make it a show stopper. With an 8 ½-foot beam, the 236 features Grady’s patented SeaV2 continuously variable vee from its severe bow entry back to 20 degrees at the transom.

Grady-White has added full console windshields this year to models like the 236, so the scratch-resistant, extra-heavy acrylic extends to the bottom of the T-top and provides full spray protection for those at the helm.

Cobia 220CC

Leading a line of Cobia center consoles is a black-hulled 220CC which the builder describes as “big-water ready.” The hull has an 8-6 beam and a variable-deadrise bottom with 20 degrees at the transom. Max horsepower is 200 and dry weight just under 3,000 pounds.

SeaVee 370Z

In its second year, SeaVee’s 370Z offers a relatively lightweight (# pounds) cored hull with twin steps. The builder points to greater fuel efficiency and more deck space/storage than center consoles of comparable size. . Its 22.5-degree-deadrise hull planes at 16 mph; with triple 350s, it can run up to 65 mph.

Boston Whaler 230 Outrage

Whaler’s new little-big boat for offshore features bold lines. Its hull offers 21 degrees of transom deadrise and 8 ½ feet of beam, weighing in at 3,800 pounds, dry. It can handle up to 350 hp, and comes in any of 11 hull colors. The builder cites 54.3 mph as top speed with a 350 Verado on the back end.

Regulator 31

Regulator’s newest hulls fills a gap with mathematical precision in its lineup between the 28 and 34. Equipped with twin 300 Yamahas, it can hit 55 mph. Regulators are serious offshore machines, witness its 24 degrees of transom deadrise. The beamy 10-4 cockpit promises tons of deck space for anglers.

A generous bilge hatch offers quick access to clearly arranged pumps, rigging and so on — and even has a place to stash those pesky 5-gallon buckets.

Invincible 33

Some boats look like they’re hauling ass even when sitting still. The high-performance stepped-vee ventilated tunnel hull of the sleek 33 certainly qualifies. Invincible says it hs the lowest drag-coefficient of any mono hull in the world. Look for 60 to 65 mph with twin 300s — though the boat is rated for up to 900 hp.

The long, sleek lines of the 33 are evident from within also, here looking aft from the bow. But don’t be deceived: The boat still sports a generous 9-7 beam.here

World Cat 280CC-X

World Cat is hoping it’s all-new 280CC will be the power cat that finally sways buyers who think they’d prefer a monohull. Its aggressive lines are a compelling starting point, as is an impressively long list of standard features. It’s 9-2 beam offers more deck and storage space than a monohull of comparable length. It comes standard with twin Yamaha F200s.

While a side view of the 280CC may not seem so dissimilar from a monohull, seeing the boat bow-on shows a much different animal.

Everglades 230CC

The 230 is marketed as a family friendly fishing boat that’s at home in inshore waters but also clearly offshore capable. The hull drafts a fairly modest 15 inches, with a moderate 19 degrees of transom deadrise. The 4,300-pound boat is rated for up to 300 horses.

Deep Impact 360 Sport

While Deep Impact isn’t at the top of the list for many serious offshore anglers, it is an eye-catcher, with its distinctive green hull and green accents throughout. Pushed by three Verado 400Rs, the 360 can top 80 mph, according to the manufacturer. The boat has a 10-foot beam and fuel capacity of more than 300 gallons. The twin-step hull features a sharp 24-degree transom deadrise.

What will a lousy $2 million, give or take, buy these days in the way of a center console fishing boat? The answer: This HydraSports Custom 53 Sueños Extreme — built for EG Vodka (organic vodka made in the United States) — with a list of features far longer than I want to try to replicate here. But it includes a 52-foot, 11-inch, 23-degree-transom-deadrise, custom-painted hull made of performance-based composite materials, four 627-hp Seven Marine outboards (with custom paint, graphics and carbon-fiber trim) that can push this monsters to a 65- to 70-mph top end, custom flooring, three freezers, two refrigerators, Seakeeper gyroscopic stabilizer, room for 1,000 gallons of fuel, 45 speakers for nine power amps pumping out 16,000 watts of power, and — well, you get the idea. This custom boat is a still more “extreme” version of an already extreme boat, and it looks the part.

(These photos were taken through the ultra-wide lens of a GoPro Hero5; the scope of this 53 would make fitting into a normal lens quite a challenge.)

Sleek Beast of a Boat

Built for the owner of EG (Enlightened Grain Spirits) Vodka, the massive center console boat takes up a good bit of the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center floor. The long, sleek hull is belied here by the wide-angle lens.

2.500 Horses Fit Easily Across a Huge Transom

With a beam of 13 feet, the huge transom has more than enough room for a quad of massive Seven Marine 627s. Those 2,500 horses can push the boat to well past the 60 mph mark. The tackle, not surprisingly, is all custom as well. The two 60-gallon livewells are designed to be large enough to drop a cast net into them, thus obviating the need to try to dump netted fish into a 5-gallon bucket first.
