Globalstar, the satellite-communication company that’s also a parent to SPOT LLC, has announced new handheld sat phones for both brands. The Globalstar GSP-1700 and the SPOT Global Phone signal the company’s successful launch of a second-generation, low-Earth-orbit satellite constellation. Both measure about five inches high and weigh about seven ounces. The rechargeable battery offers four hours of talk time and 36 hours in standby. The phones support voice mail and incoming SMS text; with the USB data cable, both connect to a laptop for e-mail and Internet, and cost $499. Service charges vary.
