Flat-bottom boats like Carolina Skiff’s 19 SWS deliver a legacy of inshore stability with an ultrashallow draft and plenty of deck space to fish multiple anglers. The simplicity of these skiffs and their affordability make them great family boats or even sensible sidekicks to an offshore ride.

Measuring 19 feet, 3 inches long, the 19 SWS features broad fore and aft casting platforms that would fish at least four. And because it draws only 4 inches of water, it can fish flats on a rapidly falling tide with little concern.

A standard jack plate helps you ease out of mere puddles, and pops you back on plane efficiently.

If you prefer live-baiting to casting plugs or flies, the 25-gallon aft livewell and the smaller well beneath the forward console seat hold plenty of shrimp or finfish and allow you to separate more delicate baits. Removable plush fishing seats fore and aft create all-day comfort.

On those days when you need gear for multiple fishing options, the 19 SWS delivers molded bow storage with overboard drains, a molded-in anchor locker and battery storage area, six flush-mount stainless rod holders, a cargo storage bag and a 70-quart removable marine cooler.

At the helm, the 19 SWS features a tilt steering wheel, switches and analog gauges. Mount a small electronics multifunction display in the helm face or atop the console. Stand or sit at the stainless-frame helm seat with an adjustable back.

Additional standard features for the SWS include a quick-disconnect windshield, a 12V trolling-motor plug, a fuel-water separator, a bilge pump, an aerator pump, a lockable access door, and a pop-out service hatch.

Structurally, this skiff is rock solid. The hull is built with a fiberglass grid system and a high-density fiber-core foam transom. Nestled onto that, the molded-fiberglass deck liner adds a finished look. The gravity-fed drain and non-skid deck and floor surfaces keep you dry and steady.

The 19 SWS weighs 2,192 pounds and features a 7-foot-5-inch beam with 19-inch-high gunwales—an average height for most bay boat-style models. It is rated for eight passengers, provides 25 gallons of fuel capacity and can carry up to a 140 hp engine; Carolina Skiff offers you your choice of outboard brands.

Standard controls include a binnacle control shifter, a Teleflex shifter control cable, a stainless-steel tilt helm and a Teleflex no-feedback premium steering cable, or you can option up to SeaStar hydraulic steering with a tilt helm.

Further personalize your skiff with options such as a 12V/24V trolling-motor panel with trim/tilt, a maxi air recirculation system, a raw-water washdown system, and a selection of hull colors, including bisque, black, electric blue and seafoam green. Shade options include a Bimini top, a canvas T-top or a fiberglass T-top in a variety of colors.

Carolina Skiff completes the package with National Marine Manufacturers Association certification and a 10-year hull warranty. Building a quality boat at a great price has always been the company’s goal. So it’s easy to see why Carolina Skiff remains the No. 1 outboard-powered fiberglass-boat brand in North America.

Sea Chaser 27 HFC Boat Review https://www.sportfishingmag.com/sea-chaser-27-hfc-boat-review/ Thu, 10 May 2018 01:14:34 +0000 https://www.sportfishingmag.com/?p=45666 Feature packed and powerful, the Sea Chaser 27 HFC center console cut seas down to size.

Testing boats during the Miami International Boat Show poses more challenges than usual. When I attempted to sea-trial Sea Chaser’s new 27 HFC demo model at this year’s show in February, I had to plan around potential buyers.

Luckily, I was able to steal away one afternoon with Pat Lanius, application engineer for Suzuki Marine. Built by Carolina Skiff, this boat sported a single, new Suzuki DF350A outboard, which has twin contra-rotating propellers, among other advanced features.

Features Galore

A throng of demo boats idled in and out of the show’s temporary marina on Virginia Key as we departed — the heavy traffic indicative of the Southeast’s booming saltwater-boat market. As Lanius manned the wheel during the long putt through the no-wake zone, I took the opportunity to check out key features, starting with the 40-gallon livewell in the leaning post abaft the helm seating. There’s also a 30-gallon livewell in the port quarter for separating bait species.

A sink and freshwater faucet in the middle of the full transom lets you clean up after rigging baits, chopping up chunks or filleting the day’s catch. You can spritz off a dirty deck with the undergunwale retractable washdown hose.

Twin bench seats fold out from the transom, but then quickly fold away when you need to clear the aft cockpit. A lift-up transom hatch offers access to rigging. An insulated 52-gallon fish box under the aft deck lets you ice down table fare.

A transom door in the starboard quarter leads to a swim platform and foldout boarding ladder. A beefy inward-opening door on the port side eases boarding or sliding a big tuna or swordfish into the cockpit.

Sea Chaser 27 HFC Boat Review
The elevated U-shaped pod in the bow converts to loungers with the addition of snap-on seating upholstery. More than 100 gallons of stowage space reside underneath. Courtesy Suzuki Marine

Room to Roam

The 9½-foot beam grants stability while fishing. Twenty-five-inch-wide walkways aside the console help when you’re racing to keep up with a hooked fish, and coaming pads encircling the interior cushion your legs during a fight. A level deck throughout should also prove easy for anglers to traverse. The stanchions for the hardtop attach to the top of the console, not the deck, eliminating trip points.

I found versatile cabinets for tackle stowage in both backrest modules for the bow seating, plus more stowage in a foldout compartment along the starboard inwale. Four rod holders behind the helm seating, four more in the hardtop, and 12 gunwale rod holders offer plenty of vertical rod stowage.

A unique seating system forward of the console folds up and out of the way to create extra foredeck space. Perhaps less practical from an angler’s point of view is the elevated U-shaped bow pod that converts to loungers with the addition of snap-on pads. A removable pedestal table in the middle lets the crew enjoy snacks and drinks on pleasure cruises. Sea Chaser packed 100 gallons of stowage space under the pods, and you can step atop them to fight a big fish around the bow or man the anchor.

The roomy anchor locker of my tester concealed a windlass. A starboard-side entry to the step-down center console interior leads to more than 5 feet of headroom and more stowage space, as well as an electric-flushing marine toilet.

Smooth Performance

The boat show’s no-wake zone finally ended, and we emerged on the other side of the Rickenbacker Causeway into the expanse of Biscayne Bay. I took the wheel to put the 27 HFC through its paces. The helm seats, which feature flip-up bolsters and fold-down armrests, felt supportive and comfortable. There’s a fold-down footrest on the seating module and an angled footrest at the base of the console.

The helm panel measures 37 inches wide — plenty of room to flush-mount a pair 15-inch electronics displays. A Suzuki C-10 4-inch color display provided all necessary engine data for testing. The Suzuki electronic throttle control made shifting and accelerating fingertip easy. I could feel the props instantly hook up as the 27 HFC burst out of the hole, planing in just 4 seconds and reaching 30 mph in 8.1 seconds.

I wrung out a top speed of 47.2 mph at 6,200 rpm, where the 350 burned 30.2 gph for 1.56 mpg. Throttling back, I found that the best mileage occurred at 4,000 rpm and 27 mph, where the Suzuki burned 14.1 gph for 2.46 mpg. That equates to a cruising range of well over 400 miles based on the 181-gallon fuel capacity.

Despite mild winds, finding choppy water was no problem, as the steady parade of boat-show vessels churned the surface water into a lumpy field of confused seas. The Sea Chaser took it in stride, its single-step hull knifing through the washing-machine waves. The 100 percent composite construction felt solid, free of creaks and rattles, no matter how hard I pushed it into the chop. Cornering at speed was predictable and confident, the props refusing to relinquish their bite, no matter how tightly I turned.

This Sea Chaser shows just how many features you can integrate into a 27-foot center console. The 27 HFC presents boat buyers who are serious about bluewater angling with a highly functional fishing machine, yet one that can also shine on the occasional fun cruise with family and friends.

Carolina Skiff calls any of its more than 60 models and sizes “the most durable, versatile, stable and economical boat on the planet,” and those who have owned or experienced a Carolina Skiff echo that assessment.

They cherish a boat they call rock solid, enjoyable and affordable. The fourth-most cited (selected) brand in our survey, Carolina Skiff drew top marks for brand reputation, fuel efficiency, price, customer service and cockpit space — all bedrock attributes.

Patented box-beam construction produces a solid, durable, nonflexing and completely wood-free hull known for shallow draft and quick on-plane performance. Foam flotation exceeds U.S. Coast Guard requirements. And thanks to its design, the Carolina Skiff line requires little to no outboard engine trim for proper  performance.

Carolina Skiff boasts three brands: the namesake plus Fun Chaser fishing and cruising deck boats, and Sea Chaser crossover boats on a distinctive hybrid fish and cruise (HFC) hull. Together they comprise a rich line of pleasure, fishing, runabout and commercial/work boats. While they come ready to fish, there are plenty of options available, in addition to a range of boat sizes.

No wonder they’re among the most seen brands at practically any marina or fishing port!

ULTRA 24

Just because a boat is a rock-solid fishing craft doesn’t mean it can’t be a mighty-fun family boat too, Carolina Skiff says — and proves – in its new Carolina Skiff Ultra 24, largest of the Ultra Elite series.

Load up with family and friends (the bow cushions love a crowd), and head for some cruising fun afloat. In minutes, you can swap those cushions for bow and stern fishing seats, and you’re ready for hardcore fishing.

The family will love the flip-up console with Porta Potti and a privacy curtain; U-shaped bow seating with removable back rests and seat cushions, and drop-in table; and the swim ladder.

Come fishing time, that table’s part of a bow casting deck, complementing the full fishable rear deck (with three jump seats) and rear 20-gallon baitwell. Gunwale racks keep rods at the ready. Nine-inch draft makes it a dream for poking — maybe even poling — around in the shallows.

Everybody will appreciate the generous storage bins beneath seats and in-deck.

An aggressive hull design handles a wide range of sea conditions.

Options include Bimini top, T-top or molded hardtop; electric flushable head; freshwater tank with shower; deluxe leaning post with tackle center; and 6-inch hydraulic jack plate.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: With one step on the wide gunwale of Carolina Skiff’s new 21 Ultra, I was struck by two factors: the boat’s rock-solid stability at rest and the high quality of the interior. Carolina Skiff boats possess a well-earned reputation as stable fishing platforms. While many anglers might still identify the company with its original rolled-edge models, Carolina Skiffs with full liners now populate the company’s line-up of boats. Yet, the 21 Ultra takes the Carolina Skiff brand to an even higher level of refinement.

** TARGET MARKET**: Carolina Skiff targets anglers interested in rugged inshore-fishing boats at competitive prices. Though decked out, the 21 Ultra is still reasonably priced at under $28K (without power), and can run up to 290 miles on a single 52-gallon tank of gas with Suzuki’s new DF140A outboard, featuring lean-burn technology. With a relatively shallow draft, the 21 Ultra serves as a versatile boat for fishing bays and near-shore waters for species such as bluefish, calico bass, redfish, seatrout, snook and striped bass.

** FISHIEST FEATURES**: A wide deck at the forepeak offers an ideal place to mount an electric trolling motor, and this boat comes standard with appropriate wiring and a trolling-motor plug receptacle. Under the forepeak is a roomy anchor locker. The center console incorporates four vertical rod holders on each side, with four more holders across the helm-seat back. Amazingly, under-gunwale horizontal rod racks store 16 more sticks, and four flush-mount trolling-rod holders lie atop gunwales. A 20-gallon livewell is concealed below the aft deck, and my test boat featured a second, optional 12-gallon livewell under the seat forward of the console.

THE LAYOUT: An elevated, bow casting deck (with voluminous dry storage below) serves as a platform from which to cast net or run the trolling motor while stalking fish. An expansive, aft casting deck easily accommodates a pair of anglers, and twin flip-up jump seats in the forward portion of the aft deck allow both anglers to step down and rest their backs while running to a new spot. The compact motorwell maximizes deck space in the stern. However, the relatively small console does not offer a lot of room for marine electronics, and I could not find a compass.

FINAL IMPRESSIONS: While the cathedral-like hull on the 21 Ultra creates a solid fishing platform, this also results in a rugged ride in big seas. We experienced a few hard landings and modest spray while running in three- to four-foot waves on a blustery day in the Atlantic Ocean off Key Largo, Florida. Once back on calmer water, the 21 Ultra felt more comfortable than any other boat of its size. Carolina Skiff is one of the most popular boat brands of all time, owing largely to the company’s value proposition — a solid, durable boat at a good price. The upscale 21 Ultra carries this tradition forward at a time when many anglers will appreciate it the most.

If you instantly think of a flat-bottom, barge-style hull when you see the Carolina Skiff name, then think again. Sure, the company built its reputation on such incredibly stable, shallow-running, affordable craft. But evolution has struck Waycross, Georgia. Designed as a two-in-one crossover vessel, the 23 Ultra Elite SS functions as a bay or nearshore/offshore boat and may well be one of this company’s best-designed, best-running boats to date!

Performance

The wind cranked during the Miami International Boat Show in February, making the bays and waterways truly ugly. A one- to two-foot chop within a period of a nanosecond was the norm.

As I idled out of the show marina, my decibel meter registered an almost silent 71 db at the helm, and the wake looked absolutely clear. Trolling at 7.5 mph, the wake exhibited moderate surface turbulence, and subsurface on centerline was minimal.

Though it carries a maximum horsepower rating of a single 250, my test boat came with a 200 hp Suzuki that lifted us onto plane in an instantaneous 2.5 seconds. I am talking up and out! The 200 offered a very respectable top speed of 42.3 mph, burning 18 gph. Budget-minded anglers will appreciate cruising at 25 while burning a scant 6.7 gph. A happy medium between optimum cruise and WOT came at 33 mph using 10.8 gph, and the boat handles very nicely at all speeds.

At 30 mph with the engine tucked under, the 23 Elite bleeds off speed quickly, and the rear end slides enough to keep everyone safely aboard. Drifting outside the inlet, the 23 showed a very short, stable roll moment with moderate transitions. After running in the nasty chop in every possible direction, I found this marine SUV to have a dry, smooth ride and not a single idiosyncrasy.

Fishing Features

Anglers prefer clean decks on small boats so cast nets and fly lines don’t snag. Carolina Skiff won’t disappoint them thanks to pop-up cleats and low-profile bow rails. Those who anchor to fish and opt for old-school methods rather than a Power-Pole will like the notch for the anchor rode molded into the anchor-locker hatch. That way, you don’t need to constantly leave the hatch open while you fish.

The 23 boasts room for 16 rods under the gunwales, along with two rod holders in each gunwale and four more across the back of the leaning post (along with a pair of drink holders), coaming cushions all around, a 20-gallon transom livewell and a compartment for storing Plano removable tackle boxes in the transom as well.

Certainly, those flat-bottomed original Carolina Skiff designs proved to be some of the most stable fishing platforms this side of a seaside pier. Thankfully, this new hull design sacrifices virtually nothing in the lateral stability or roll-moment arenas. You can stand on the rail and this 23 barely leans. Riding beam-to the seas while drift fishing is as comfortable as it can possibly be with a short roll moment and extremely gentle transitions.

Boat Design and Construction

The Ultra Elite SS series comes with loads of standard features, unlike the original Carolina Skiffs, where all items other than the bare hull were optional.

The 23 sports a very nice console with room for a head. It has a wraparound, Lucite windscreen and a cushioned cooler forward of the console to store cold items and sit comfortably. A second, larger cooler fits beneath the leaning post. The foredeck comes with a receiver, so you can mount a pedestal table and use the forward seating as cocktail or lounging space.

So actually, you might consider this as three boats in one, as the cruising aspect borders on deck-boat comfort.

Carolina Skiff molds high-density foam blocks from the heart of the deck structure. The hull of the 23 consists of a thick 22-millimeter gelcoat layer, fiberglass mat, Coremat, tri-directional fiberglass in all high-stress spots and woven roving. The company fits a closed-cell foam-filled stringer grid into the hull, and bonds the deck to it with a fiberglass and resin mix, making for a very stiff, durable, virtually one-piece hull. Anyone who trailers his boat and has had to clean the bugs and grime off the windshield should particularly appreciate the removability of that piece of equipment. Stowed in the console while on the highway, it should last forever without your having to scrape a lovebug ever again!

Designed as a three-in-one crossover vessel, the 25 Elite SS functions as a bay or offshore boat for fishing and as a deck boat for family cruising. Drawing just nine inches, the skiff floats in shallow water, but at 25 feet in length and capable of carrying twin outboards, it can also fish deep.

At the same time, the Elite’s bow features plush cushioning with an optional deck table. At the stern, Carolina Skiff designed a transom-wide seating platform – portside 22-gallon livewell and starboard-side battery storage areas joined by a 120-quart cooler – that comes with removable cushions and backrests.

Standard fishing features for this center console include 16-rod under-gunwale storage, four vertical rod holders across the transom and a leaning post with a 70-quart cooler. Add options based on how you’d most likely use the boat. Fishing-related choices include a T-top or hardtop; leaning post with tackle box and rod holders, or a molded fiberglass leaning post with a 32-gallon livewell. For family cruising, add a bow deck table, Bimini top and freshwater tank.

Storage includes space beneath the console (though the boat comes with a portable head stowed inside the step-down console), three hatches in the bow, plus an in-deck hold for the cushions and optional table.

At the helm, Carolina Skiff offers hydraulic steering and a tilt wheel, plus ample space for electronics and engine-specific digital gauges.

In Suzuki performance tests, published by Carolina Skiff, the 25 Elite SS with twin F90s ran 41.5 mph on the top end at 6,100 rpm. However, the vessel can operate with a maximum 300 horsepower should you require higher performance numbers.
