It’s been nearly 20 years since Cobia Boats, which was already 40 years old at the time, was acquired by Maverick Boat Group and quickly elevated to a level matching MBG’s other industry-leading brands: Maverick, Hewes and Pathfinder. Today Cobia is one of the top-selling fishing boats, blending tournament-grade performance and family comfort.

Cobia 301 CC trolling
A tackle station at the back of the two helm seats includes a freshwater sink, rigging station and storage.

Cobia models over 26 feet are built using MBG’s proprietary Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion System, providing the stiffer and stronger construction that these larger boats need for heavier engine loads and long-range trips in big seas and open oceans. VARIS construction also boosts speed and fuel efficiency.

The company is a consistent supporter of conservation groups, including those focused on the marine environment and its fisheries.

There are a pair of oval 28-gallon livewells.

Cobia 301 CC

Offering both fishability and family friendliness, the Cobia 301 CC has an inward-opening side door that welcomes aboard the big ones, and makes entering and exiting while diving and boarding or debarking easy.

The 301 CC, an expanded version of its popular predecessor, the Cobia 296 CC, combines that proven running surface with additional space—82 square feet, in all—for fishability and comfort. A narrow helm console makes it easy to move throughout the boat. A tackle station at the back of the two helm seats includes a freshwater sink, rigging station and storage.

The bow features an electronically adjusted table/sun lounge. Bow cushions with backrests are optional. Same with a hardtop, with or without windshield, and sunshades. Kingfish rod holders, outriggers and kite rod holders can be added to the hardtop.

Standard are two 80-gallon fish boxes with macerating overboard drains, stainless-steel gunwale-mounted rod holders, undergunwale rod storage, and a pair of oval 28-gallon livewells. A novel option is a deep-drop setup with reinforced gunwale boards and electric-reel outlets.

Standard power is twin Yamaha F300s, with DES, joystick and autopilot optional. Garmin electronics including radar are among choices, as are underwater lights.

Editor’s Tip

Having enough bait can be the difference between a good day and a great day. If you’re a live bait aficionado, make sure the boat you’re choosing offers at least 30 gallons of livewell capacity. Dual wells offer more volume, and let you separate bait by species. -Joe Albanese, Executive Editor Salt Water Sportsman

Cobia Boats is part of Maverick Boat Group, along with Maverick, Hewes and Pathfinder brands, comprising one of the most respected names in the marine industry.

When Maverick bought the hallowed Cobia brand in 2005, it immediately began refining the brand’s quality, design, and performance to match its three other nameplates, all known as easy-to-fish, uncluttered, and fishing-focused. Like them, Cobias balance freeboard for safety and fishability, boast handholds that are out of the way and yet handy, and offer intuitive helms and easy-to-operate convertible parts.

Cobia 280 CC

Cobia’s popular 277 CC has become the 280 CC. To the former’s proven running surface, smart layout, and abundant fishing features has been added a console design integrating a strong and stylish hardtop frame, a full three-sided windshield with electric wiper and vent, and an acrylic infinity dash ready for a full array of Garmin electronics.

Fishing features include two 47-gallon insulated fish boxes with macerated overboard drains; a 42-gallon livewell is optional. The helm seat features a tackle station and upgraded seating. Additional fishing options include kingfish and kite rod holders, and hardtop outriggers.

A 25-inch transom and optional cockpit toe rails provide a secure setting for battle with the roomy 94-square-foot cockpit.

The 280 CC boasts a full-feature head, and freshwater showers at transom and console sink.

For  sure-footed angling and boating ease, a boarding-ladder is hidden beneath a hatch, while the recessed bow rail and fold-down cleats and nav lights avoid tangles and snags. Even the anchor tucks into the bow; a windlass is optional.

The 280 CC is powered by twin Yamaha outboards, F200s or F300s with digital electronic steering.

Cobia boats feature smart deck layouts that place everything where it can be operated with minimal effort, allowing movement through the boat, free of awkward steps or hazards.

Freeboard hits the sweet spot—not too much or too little.

Wiring is easily accessed and labeled for maintenance.

Cobia hulls boast fine, sharp stems that use all of the boat’s length to slice through waves; large bow flares then push down spray for a ride that is soft, dry, relaxing and fuel efficient.

Cobia 320 CC

Cobia’s 320 CC is a big-water, hard-fishing boat ready for long-range adventures but still comfortably trailerable.

Serious fishing features include an unobstructed 82-square-foot cockpit, a tackle center with a sink and bait-prep area, undergunwale rod storage, two 55-gallon macerated in-deck fish boxes, and twin pressurized livewells with combined 70-gallon capacity.

An inward-opening side door can be a tuna door or, with a stowable ladder, provide cockpit entry from the dock or after a dive. Deluxe, independent helm seats face a panel with space for a pair of 16-inch displays and more.

Typical of Cobias, the topside of the 320 is both elegant and comfortable. Split bow seats flank a retractable table that stores flush within the floor and raises electronically to become either a sun deck or bow table.

A walk-down, forward-entry head with 6-foot-2-inch ceiling houses an electric toilet, a sink with a shower faucet, a vanity, and storage cabinets.

To the optional fiberglass T-top, you might add kingfish rod holders or outriggers. Among other fishing options are four flush-mounted kite-fishing rod holders and upgraded electronics packages.

Power choices include twin Yamaha 300s or 425 XTOs—with digital electric steering—and, if optioned, the Helm Master Ex, an autopilot and joystick control.

If you’re searching for a family-friendly fishing boat that’s easy to trailer and store, and versatile enough to fish practically anywhere, the 262 CC, one of the latest additions to Cobia’s center-console family, might just be the ideal ride for you.

Cobia designed the hull of the 26-foot 1-inch boat to provide a comfortable, dry ride even in a moderate chop. And, while not a bay boat, the 262’s 17-inch draft will enable you to fish protected inshore waters when high winds and seas force you to abandon offshore fishing plans.

The 262’s high bow and sheerline, which gradually descends toward midship, combine to provide reassuring seaworthiness, while the hull’s forward flare pushes spray down and away from the boat. Cobia employed its proprietary Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion System (VARIS) for strength and durability in the build, while minimizing weight.

A dedicated locker at the bow stows the anchor and rode, and U-shaped seating forward includes substantial dry storage underneath, as well as fold-away backrests for lounging. A large compartment, ahead of the console, is perfect for stashing fenders and other large or wet gear.

Cobia 262 helm

The 262’s console walk-around space and storage exceed those of its predecessor, the 261 CC. A roomy head compartment inside the console includes a permanent marine toilet, sink, freshwater faucet and mirror. Cobia offers a fiberglass hardtop and full-height, three–sided windshield with wiper and vent, both optional, to provide shade and better protect the helm from the elements.

The dash features sufficient mounting space for a pair of 9-inch MFDs plus other essentials, like an engine-monitoring display and a VHF radio. A pair of contoured captain’s chairs with flip-up bolsters and fold-down armrests offer superb comfort at the helm. The fiberglass module that serves as the base for the helm seats includes a tackle-storage center, leaving considerable fishing room in the cockpit.

This Cobia’s fishing features include 12 flush-mount rod holders on the covering boards and transom, gunwale racks for six rods, and optional rocket launchers for five more on the hardtop and four aft of the helm seats. There’s a transom door too, so the crew can slide large gaffed fish onboard without hoisting them over the gunwales. A 29-gallon transom livewell features a clear-acrylic hatch.

The lengthy list of available options also includes outriggers, cockpit toerail, coaming pads, raw- and freshwater washdowns, windlass with wireless remote, portable or electric head with macerator, bow and aft shades, and much more.

During our test, the 262 CC proved quite responsive and agile. Twin Yamaha F200s on the transom supplied ample pep, swiftly pushing the boat up on plane, accelerating from zero to 30 mph in less than 9 seconds, and surpassing 53 mph at wide-open throttle.

Turning 4,000 rpm, the Cobia cruises at a quick pace of 36.9 mph while burning just 13.4 gph. That translates to 2.75 mpg and a range of 398 miles based on 90 percent of the 161-gallon fuel capacity.

Cobia Boats deck layouts position everything at hand when needed or wanted, and out of the way otherwise. No awkward steps or trip hazards. Enough freeboard to feel secure, not so much that fishing’s a pain. Handholds are unobtrusive, but handy when you need one.

It’s all done so you can focus on the fish and the fishing, not make adjustments to your boat.

There’s a lot to admire when you consider a Cobia: a fine, far-forward bow entry that extends running surfaces, slicing through waves before pushing them aside to create a soft ride. Further smoothing that ride is the variable-deadrise hull, which also aids fuel efficiency.

Cobias are built with backing plates and screw-retention materials at each fastening point, double-clamped hoses reinforced with sealant, and epoxy-coated and pressure-tested aluminum fuel tanks. Decks are stiffened with carbon-reinforced beams. Bilge interiors are finished. Electrical harnesses are created in-house with copper-tinned wiring that’s labeled.

Cobia is a Maverick Boat Group brand, along with Maverick, Hewes and Pathfinder boats.

Cobia 350 CC

The new Cobia 350 Center Console blends high style and hard-charging performance so you can fish hard and play easy.

A double-stepped, vacuum-infused hull makes getting to fishing grounds fast and fuel efficient, ahead of triple 300 hp or twin 425 hp Yamahas.

Fishing features include dual 42-gallon bait tanks (pleasing 96 percent of CC respondents), two large in-floor fish boxes, full tackle station, and bait prep area. Optional are deluxe top, kingfish rod holders, outriggers and kite-rod holders. Wide at 11 feet, 2 inches—as well as wide-open—the 350 CC has plenty of room for several anglers to fish.

The head is spacious, stand-up tall, and provides lockable storage for rods and gear. Courtesy Cobia Boats

Other options include joystick control, air conditioning and Garmin Master Suite electronics, including radar.

The 350 CC’s 11-person -seating includes triple helm seats, a two-person chaise longue and cushioned sun lounge; 40 percent of CC survey respondents want bow seating. A hideaway bow table electronically rises, for picnic or party or to complete a casting deck.

Within the walk-down console is a spacious berth with wooden cabinetry, an electric head, a combination sink/shower, and hidden, lockable rod storage. Easy access to the logical wiring and electrical system assures easy maintenance down the road.

Cobia prides itself on deck layouts with everything where it’s most likely used, and where that use is as easy as possible.

No awkward steps or trip hazards on deck. Handholds are handy when you need them, unobtrusive when you don’t. Displays within sight, controls within reach. You focus on the fish, not negotiating your boat.

Cobia hulls’ far-forward bow entries extend running surfaces to slice through waves before pushing them away for a dry ride. Variable deadrise hull gives soft, relaxing and fuel-efficient rides—what 80 percent of offshore center-console owners call their most valued characteristic.

Cobia 240 DC running shot
Powered by a Yamaha F300 outboard, the Cobia 240 DC leaps to plane in 5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 50 mph. Cobia

Dual-console models rank as one of the fastest-growing segments in the saltwater-boat market, and after spending time aboard the Cobia 240 Dual Console, I gained a greater appreciation for this popular phenomenon.

From the trailerable size, stylish lines and ample seating to the angling amenities, smooth ride and brisk performance, this boat offers everything you need for fishing and other on-water activities.

This boat is also built for years of service. The 240 DC’s decks stiffened with carbon-reinforced beams, hand-laid fiberglass with thermal barriers (to maximize gelcoat cosmetics), and fiberglass-encapsulated, reinforced thermoplastic-polymer-foam stringer systems provide outstanding durability.

Fishing Heritage
I was joined on my test day in early April by Charlie Johnson, director of marketing for the Maverick Boat Group, which includes Hewes, Pathfinder and Maverick, as well as Cobia.

“MBG’s heritage is as a fishing-boat company,” Johnson says. “So, you are going to see that reflected strongly in the design, features and construction of every Cobia model.

“The Cobia 240 DC is the perfect blend of comfort, amenities and fishing smarts in an easily manageable size,” he adds.

Cobia molded a standard 22‑gallon livewell into the transom in the port quarter. I also found a pair of standard, insulated 24-gallon fish lockers under the cockpit sole. Macerators for these lockers are optional. A third insole locker for watersports items such as wakeboards lies between the consoles.

Ease of Service
I love the access to the bilge rigging. An electrically operated hatch hinges upward from the interior side of the full transom. Every boater will eventually need to change out a pump or service another piece of equipment, and that’s why I really appreciate this feature.

A covered sink with a freshwater faucet and cutting board for rigging tackle and baits resides abaft the helm seat on the starboard side. I discovered a stowage recess under the hinged cutting board and three cabinets for tackle items and fishing tools such as pliers and knives. Four stainless-steel gunwale rod holders are also standard, as is the fiberglass hardtop with rod holders integrated into the aft supports of the powder-coated aluminum frame.

The 240 DC’s helm panel spans nearly the entire width of the starboard console, and that offers plenty of room to flush-mount an array of marine-electronics screens. My test boat included an optional Garmin GPSMap 7610xsv multifunction display, a Yamaha 6YC engine gauge, and a JL Audio display to control the optional amplified eight‑speaker stereo system.

Power Galore
Boasting a Yamaha F300 V-6 outboard as standard (indeed, the only engine choice for this model), my 240 DC was certainly not underpowered. I was anxious to see how fast it would run. So, once we cleared the no-wake zones, I punched the throttle, and the 240 DC vaulted to plane in 5 seconds, reaching 30 mph in 9 seconds.

Using the flip-up bolster on the thickly padded helm seat as a leaning pad, I continued to advance the throttle, eventually maxing out the boat speed at 50 mph at 5,400 rpm, where the F300 burned 26.3 gallons per hour, resulting in 1.9 mpg at wide-open throttle.

I throttled back to see where I might find peak efficiency. I found it at 3,500 rpm and 28 mph, where the Yamaha burned 8.9 gph for 3.14 mpg. That translates to a range of more than 350 miles based on the 123-gallon fuel capacity.

The 240 DC sports a deep-V hull with 21.5 degrees of deadrise at the transom and a wide bow flare to tame rough seas and knock down spray. Standard trim tabs helped me dial in the ride in rough water. Cornering proved easy and precise at speed, thanks to SeaStar Solutions hydraulic steering and the stainless-steel steering wheel with a tilt-and-lock helm.

Helm Protection
For greater comfort at eye-watering speeds, you can close the center section of the wraparound windshield and secure the walk-through door to block the wind blast. When not in use, the door swings open to secure against the starboard console.

Within the interior of the step-down port console, I found 45 inches of headroom, a Corian countertop with sink and freshwater faucet, and a macerated electric-flush marine toilet—all standard.

The 240 DC can seat as many as nine, thanks to a hideaway transom bench (one of the most comfortable I have seen), portside back-to-back seating that quickly converts to a lounge chair (a 91-quart cooler resides underneath), and bow seating that doubles as a pair of forward-facing loungers or an expansive sun pad. There’s also cavernous dry stowage under the bow seats.

On fishing days, you might remove the forward-seating upholstery and leave it at home so you can step up onto the elevated pods to fight a fish or gain access to the anchor. I found a massive anchor locker served by an in-stem anchor chute. An electric windlass is available as an option.

Some days, families just want to go swimming or snorkeling, and the 240 DC obliges with an integrated extended swim platform with a hidden telescoping boarding ladder. A pullout freshwater shower nozzle comes standard, and a transom door in the starboard quarter offers easy access. For entry at the bow, Cobia also includes a removable ladder.

In an era of escalating boat sizes and prices, the Cobia 240 DC represents a manageable, versatile, and seaworthy choice for families who enjoy fishing and other fun activities on the water.

LOA: 23’7″ | Beam: 8’10” | Fuel Capacity: 125 gal. | Dry Weight: 3,500 lb. plus power | Max HP: 300 | Seating/Weight Capacity: 8/1,700 lb. | Certifications: NMMA Courtesy Cobia Boats

Cobia has been part of the Maverick Boat Group family for fourteen years and along with siblings Hewes and Pathfinder prides itself on being a quality company with quality people building quality products.

That commitment is seen in such brand-wide attributes as 100 percent wood-free construction (avoiding a key buyer remorse woe revealed in our survey: wood rot); double-clamped and -sealed hoses and fittings; pressure-tested, epoxy-coated aluminum fuel tanks; and everything checked through a 300-point quality-assurance program.

Each boat’s design begins with a clear goal and set of criteria aimed at its intended use. The design process flows backward from that goal, with the assistance of serious anglers, committed boaters and skilled craftsmen. It’s not just a great boat; it’s a superb boat, is built to industry-leading American Boat and Yacht Council standards.

According to our survey, more than one-third of Cobia owners have owned their boats for seven years or more, higher than industry average.

Cobia 240 CC
Take the proven hull of the cherished Cobia 237 CC, create atop it a new deck even friendlier to both the tournament fisher and his or her family, and you’ve got Cobia’s new 240 Center Console.

The cockpit’s bow-to-stern level floor makes it the survey-desired 360-degree-access setting in which to wage a war with the biggest of fish (or frolic with the cruising family.) That carbon-fiber beam-reinforced deck houses a pair of 40-gallon insulated fish boxes ready for the catch of the day. Bait stays frisky in the 28-gallon livewell near the tackle station. Aft foldaway bench seating is standard.

Family time? A forward-entry walk-down head is a sure pleaser. Rain and spray are vanquished with an optional three-sided full windshield with wiper and vent, assisting in accomplishing the dry ride valued by survey respondents; add a hardtop (with additional rod holders) if you like. The whole gang will cheer for the cup holders and USB ports throughout the boat.

The hull? Fans of its parent, the 237 CC, know it for its comfortable open-water running — the most frequent demand of center-console boaters — and for fuel efficiency. Rated for up to 300 hp, the 240 CC scoots along at 44 mph ahead of a pair of Yamaha F115s, thrifty at 3 mpg at 27 mph. It’s range is 375 miles at that speed, thanks to a fuel capacity of 125 gallons.

Survey Says: On Target

  • Seaworthy, comfortable ride
  • Livewell for several dozen baits
  • Foldaway aft seating for comfortable cruising or passage to the fishing grounds
  • Meets owner desire for no-wood, rot-free construction
  • Forward coaming pads convert to lounge seatbacks, further expanding seating comfort
  • Generous standards

Owners Say

  • Love livewell and (optional) T-top

Cobia Says

  • Proven hull, contemporary deck layout with a no-step transition from aft deck to foredeck
  • Solid feel
  • Low maintenance, even years down the line
  • Safe, reliable

Cobia’s 240CC features a contemporary deck layout that optimizes form and function to please everyone from tournament anglers to family fishermen, the company says. The boat’s 8-foot-10-inch beam creates a wide-open cockpit and stable platform; the level floor from bow to stern helps anglers fight fish along the rail without tripping.

Twin 33-gallon fish boxes in the sole, a 28-gallon livewell and a standard aft tackle station satisfy all the angling necessities. At the end of the day, cruising family and friends will appreciate the hideaway rear bench seat with backrest, optional forward-facing backrests for the bow seating and the forward-entry step-down head space below the console.

To keep everyone cool and comfortable, opt for the fiberglass hardtop, which is available with a factory windshield and in two-tone coloration. The 240 CC can carry up to 300 hp as a single or twins, and offers 125 gallons of fuel capacity.
