60-Pound Wahoo on 4-Pound Line and Other Pending World Records

Four great catches await approval as new world records by the IGFA

WAHOO — 4-Pound Line

It’s party time in Tonga for this group of Kiwis celebrating the capture of a 60-pound wahoo on 4-pound-test line this past October. The team of angler Guy Jacobsen and Capt. John Batterton has made many phenomenal big-game ultralight-line catches, particularly of billfish. This one struck a trolled Rapala and required 25 minutes to bring to the boat. The current 4-pound record is 42 pounds, 3 ounces, from Ecuador in 2004. For more information on the International Game Fish Association and/or world records, visit the IGFA.

BLUEFIN TUNA — Junior Angler

This **618-pound bluefin tuna****** would be a tough catch for an NFL linebacker, let alone for 12-year-old Jenna Gavin of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Yet she fought the beast to the boat — which was skippered by her father, Capt. John Gavin — in less than two hours after the tuna struck a mackerel this past October. If approved, the catch smashes the existing junior-angler record of 430 pounds, 15 ounces, caught in 2002 off France.

YELLOWMARGIN TRIGGERFISH — All-Tackle

Christmas Island produced this pending all-tackle-record 12-pound, 6-ounce yellowmargin triggerfish for Pang Kim Lock of Singapore. The angler fished the remote Pacific island this past November to make the catch after it struck a Henry’s fly. The catch more than doubles the current all-tackle record for the species, taken at Diego Garcia in 2010.

EUROPEAN BASS — 8-Pound Line

This 19-pound European bass — arguably the most prized game fish of Europe’s coastal shorelines — is pending as the 8-pound record. Taken off the coast of France this past September, the trophy hit a Daiwa swimbait for angler Guillaume Fourrier of Dieppe, France. If approved, it will defeat a 16-pound, 5-ounce Euro bass caught at Bahia de Rosas, Spain, in 1989.
