A group of anglers last week landed two of the rarest billfish in the world, and did so on one day aboard the same boat.

The skipper, Bo Daniels, and his crew were trolling about 20 miles south of Dana Point, California, when they hooked two short-billed spearfish. A recent surge in temperatures off the Southern California coast have brought in more tropical species such as mahi mahi. Yet no one would have guessed that you might also catch a spearfish, let alone enjoy a double hookup on this species.

This long skinny billfish has a relatively short bill, hence the name. It is more commonly found in the waters off the Hawaiian Islands. The fish caught last week weighed less than 40 pounds each.
